Jämtland/Härjedalen – Sweden's playground

Many people say that Jämtland/Härjedalen is Sweden's playground. Its beautiful, pristine natural environment, with great mountain massifs, vast forests, and friendly people, add up to the perfect destination for all ages. Whether the aim is a relaxing holiday or an adrenaline-filled adventure, the options are endless. Winter, spring, summer, autumn, we offer something for everyone.

In wintertime you can experience the area at its best on skis, skates, or perhaps a dog sled. Whether you choose cross-country skiing in Funasdalen, Östersund, Åre, or Södra Årefjällen, or if you prefer to tackle the piste, there are plenty of options for experienced skiers and beginners alike. In the winter of 2009 Åre was named one of the world's top ten ski resorts: here extreme skiers and jibbers intermingle with more sedate family groups. The Funäsdal area offers family-friendly skiing with powder skiing among the trees. Beginners can avail themselves of Bydalen, Lofsdalen or Vemdalen.

During the summer you will be offered a variety of activities and attractions. Set forth in search of the local "sea serpent", pet the tame moose at Moose Garden, walk in the empty river bed at the Dead Waterfall or visit the exotic Thai pavilion in a spruce forest in Jämtland. On Jamtli you will experience history in an entertaining format, and why not combine a visit with a swim in Forsaån, the natural lagoon which in recent years has become a popular bathing area on sunny days.

Hike or bike in pristine wilderness. The Jämtsk-Härjedalska mountains offer hiking accessible to all. In some places it is possible to cycle into the wilderness. While you're out there, keep your eyes open – if you are lucky you will see one of the many wild animals that also live in the county: moose, bear, Arctic fox and musk ox are among the species you may encounter, with luck.

Relax in the evenings and enjoy the delicious food products the county offers. Jämtland County boasts the largest number of small-scale food producers in Sweden. This put together with our magnificent raw materials makes for some unique eating.

Welcome to Jämtland! Enjoy!
